Virtual DJ

Recently experimenting with virtual dj. This software really is the bollocks. i've attached MIDI controllers (on my USB xboard 25) for various things, bass, mid, high EQs, crossfade etc. Also useful is built-in shoutcast server, MP3/WAV recording, playlist database, saved cue points etc.

There are a number of things which need configuring though.

  • Timestretch: By default the software will compensate pitch when you adjust speed, this causes artefacts when using the lower CPU version of the algorithm "Enabled", and unusable on settings "High Quality" through "Super Insane". i would recommend turning this off.
  • Speed control range: This defaults to +/-34% which means that a 7bit (128 levels) MIDI controller cannot provide a fine enough granuality to manually beatmatch. It can be changed to +/-8% which is probably more suitable.
  • Two sound cards vs one sound card with F/R out: Different delays in processing make two sounds cards option unusable for manual beatmatching. Configuration of a USB 24bit Live! soundblaster card to use F/R separately does not appear straightforward. i'll post details later. --------. You need to use the proper creative drivers, although the generic Windows ones appear to work (until you come to weird tasks like software mixing.
  • CPU load: Recommend quitting virus killers, switching of page file, and the usual tricks.
